I'm just back from a seven day trip into the heart of the Syrian revolution in the northwestern part of the country.

Due to safety issues, was very difficult to gain access to good photo opportunities but in the end I managed to take some shots of Free Syrian Army soldiers, injured civilians, anti-regime demonstrations and some destruction provoked by Syrian Army attacks against civilian population.

The biggest adventure was really the way in and out of the country. My colleague and friend Marc Hofer and I entered Syria illegally with the help of some local smugglers. A story to tell some other time!

Last week, while in Lebanon, I got the chance to interview a few Syrian refugees that fled their country in fear of persecution over their participation in demonstrations against the Bashir Assad's regime.

Many of the men I spoke with told some disturbing episodes of physical and metal torture while in custody of the Mukhabarat (Syrian secret police), in the military prison of Homs.

News of former Libyan leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi death are spreading around the world. According to the National Transitional Council (NTC) officials, Gaddafi has been killed after an assault on is home town of Sirte.

I can only imagine the atmosphere and the emotion throughout the country right now. Generations of libyans have long been dreaming for this moment.

I'm out of Libya now. Feel like my work here is done. Was great to cover the past three weeks but with the media circus in town it become very difficult to keep working. When the big shot TV crews arrive they always mess things up for other people. They literally throw money around to force freelancers and smaller publications to leave.

Going home now. Will take a break for now but will be back to work somewhere else very soon.

Two days ago managed to enter Bab Al-Aziziya, Gadafy's compound in Tripoli, during the attack by the rebel forces. To shoot among the chaos, sniper shots and loathing was an intense experience as a journalist.

Left Libya last night. Crossed the border into Tunisia at late hours and as soon i got to the hotel realised that the fall of Tripoli might actually be imminent.

Like any other journalist who has been reporting on this revolution since the very beginning, I just can't leave the story behind at this late stage. So, i'll be heading towards Tripoli tomorrow morning. Hope to get there before the city is "liberated".

Still in the western mountains of Libya, following the advance by the rebel forces towards Tripoli. Spent the day in the frontline. The revolutionaries pushed a good amount of ground north but the fighters do not allow us to be right in the action.

One of my images of South Ossetian refugees during the 2008 Georgia-Russia war has been selected for an exhibition at the 12 Star Gallery by Simon Baker, the curator of photography at Tate Modern and Ines de Bordas.

The exhibition entitled Active Witness, brings together works by photographers representing 27 European countries and celebrates the European Year of Volunteering.

To mark the opening, I was invited to take part in a talk discussing contemporary documentary practice, together with the curator Simon Baker, the Romanian photographer Dana Popa and Mark Burton, a photographer from the United Kingdom.

The exhibition is now open to the public and will run till September 9th, Monday to Friday from 10am-6pm at 12 Star Gallery, 32 Smith Square, London SW1.

Praise the lord but "no pictures please"

Spent the morning trying to get access to one of the many highly entertaining evangelic ceremonies around Nairobi. No one other than Helicopter Preacher (the guy actually goes by that name), was keen to let me in.

After ten minutes explaining my totally made up intents, Helicopter Preacher agreed to let me take part of the ceremony but "no pictures allowed sir!". I think he sensed my bullshit, however he really expected to have me converted by the end of his performance.

Spent twenty minutes contemplating the show in this little room on the first floor of some shitty building just across my hotel. Saw some loud singing, frantic hands in the air and take-the-devil-out-of-this-body sort of shebang, a moment I always wanted to photograph. At the first attempt to sneak a frame, the gorillas in charged of "my protection" kindly escorted me out. No violence involved. Quite happy with that!

In the end, no pictures from the evangelic dudes in Kenya, but I'm posting one of some religious women in South Sudan.

One more journey to South Sudan over. Glad to leave Juba's boredom and the excessive alcohol and cigarets consumption attached to it. However, must be said that I had a brilliant time hanging out with a great gang of fellow journalists and photographers. Post independence late night parties at the Beduine hotel were epic!

Bye South Sudan. I'll be back when the shit hits the fan.

Juba Central Prison

This morning my colleague and friend Jose Miguel Calatayud and I were allowed into the juvenile section of Juba's central Prison to do a series of interviews and photographs with some of the youngest inmates. Was great to get in contact with the reality of prison's life, however the stories of those serving time are indeed very sad. Many of the children are in for murder or theft.

One of those is Mangar Abat, a 16 year old boy doing a three year sentence for manslaughter. Mangar risks to spend the rest of his life he doesn't pay a Dia of 30 thousand Sudanese Pound. Dia is also known as blood money, a sum the accused need to give to the victim's family. This practice is common in some Sub-Saharan and Middle East countries.

Independence at last

The Republic of South Sudan (or strangely enough - ROSS) is now officially an independent state. The long, hot, tiring and badly organised ceremony called thousands to John Garang's memorial in Juba, where president Salva Kiir and a few world dignitaries addressed words of joy and prosperity to the people of Africa's newest nation.

Unfortunately the messy security didn't allow journalists and photographers to work freely. Despite their lack of understanding for the needs of media coverage, some of us managed to do a couple of interesting images while wandering through the crowds.

Couple of hours to independence

South Sudan will in the next couple of hours become independente. The population and the authorities are in full swing preparing the official ceremony. Juba is now cleaner and more organised. A move to show the international dignitaries the great job the government is doing for this country. However, the outskirts of the future capital, and the rest of the country, have suffer no changes.

Below, a photograph taking this afternoon in Saint Mary's neighborhood, a slum of Juba that houses around a thousand people. The government plans to destroy it in the coming months, leaving its residents homeless.

Preparing for independence

A few days from the independence of the Republic of South Sudan (yes, they finally came out with the official name for the country!), the future government gave this morning a taste of what will be the main ceremony on the 9th, with a mock parade by the armed forces and some worker unions at the John Garang Memorial in Juba.

In Juba now for almost a week. Beside the bureaucratic stuff needed to work here, have spent most of my time trying to find an interesting story. Unfortunately there's nothing or almost nothing new to do. My friend and colleague Jose Miguel Calatayud, AKA Chemi, have been working on a story on IDPs. The past two days we have been in contact with the tough reality of displaced life.

Below, a photograph of one of our subjects, Rosa Jonathan, a Southern Sudanese woman who arrived from Khartoum last January. Rosa lives with her 6 children in a small rented house outside Gudele, a small locality in the outskirts of Juba. Rosa and her family depend uniquely on the help of United Nations' World Food Program.

Back in Juba since early this week. Happy to see the future capital of Southern Sudan a bit cleaner and slightly more organised. Well, by "organised" I mean: the chaos is less of a chaos.

But there's things that never change. The evening animation at Nile Resort still the usual same. A random group of young guys take the stage one at the time to give a peculiar (and loud) karaoke/dance performance. The locals find it great!

In Nairobi for the weekend

As expected, the Government of Southern Sudan's liaison in Nairobi (GOSS) didn't felt compelled in accelerate the approval of my visa application. As a result I'm stuck in Nairobi for the weekend. Hoping to get the permits on Monday and fly to Juba by Tuesday morning.

One of my photographs (see below), along with the work of other Irish-based photographers, will take part in '60 Years – Stories of Survival and Safe Haven', an exhibition of portraits of refugees who came to Ireland over the past 60 years since the signing of the UN Convention relating to refugees in 1951.

The exhibition, commissioned by the UNHCR Ireland, will be open to the public at the chq Building from the 20th to the 23rd of June. Subsequently, it will form part of the PhotoIreland Festival at the Complex Gallery in Smithfield, during the month of July.

Ras Lanouf

In my first attempt to cross the last rebel forces' checkpoint near the frontline before Ras Lanouf, pro-Gaddafi troops delivered an air strike at around 500 meters from the car I was traveling in.

A few minutes later, while interviewing a defective general at the same checkpoint, a second strike hit the ground forcing all the rebels to flee the area. Ras Lanouf is now in the hands of Gaddafi forces.

Deported from Yemen

I am no long available to take on assignments in Yemen. The Yemeni police decide to detain me without any justification, short after my arrival at Sanaa's airport.

Despite a valid visa and a entry stamp issued by the airport authorities, after more than two hours trying to convince the plain clothed agents that I was not a threat to yemen's national security, I end up being man handled, having the passport and mobile phone confiscated and deported to istanbul with instructions to never attempt to visit yemen again!
